Many AS/400 and iSeries shops run RPG programs which have had observability removed. This has usually been done for one of two reasons:
1. Since the non-executed observable information takes up most of the size of a *PGM object, removing it realizes a large savings in disk space.
2. Vendors often remove the observable information to make their applications less prone to be altered or reverse-engineered.
Since V3R6, users have been able to move from release to release without difficulty; however, with a move to V6R1, programs compiled with a target release of V4R5 or earlier which have had observability removed will not be able to be re-encapsulated (re-compiled) to run under V6R1.
We are looking for iSeries shops currently running RPG/36/38/400 programs
without observability to beta test our new RPG non-observable decompiler. If you are interested, please email us and someone will contact you.
